 Spiral Light Bulbs or CFLs
Compact florescent bulbs are no-brainers. Only 10% of the energy used by a conventional (incandescent) light bulb generates lighting. Compared to standard incandescent bulbs, CFLs reduce lighting costs by about 70%, operate at a much cooler temperature, last 4-10 times longer and, of course, cost more.
But they're worth it because the operating cost is much less and you change them less often. A CFL will save about $50 in electricity costs over it's lifetime and about 260 lbs of CO2 per year.
CFLs are especially useful for ceiling fixtures that are a pain to access or common hallways where lights are on for long periods of time.
